In the US we always complain that we never got any cool utes like the Aussies. Well America this is our ute. In 05/06 the SSR had a 400hp V8 engine with the option of a manual transmission. It was also a convertible and it can haul mulch. Tell me again why this doesn’t get more love?

I’m guessing a large part of the problem is that the people who normally (and I use that word very loosely) buy utes are a couple price brackets down from where they marketed the SSR. Marketing the SSR to the gold-chains-and-hairy-chests middle aged Corvette demographic was doomed to failure.

Funktheduck

03/14/2016 at 10:02 | 0 |
I think there’s a few reasons
1. Retro styling only stays cool for so long
2. The stuff I’ve seen about them says the retractable top makes for a small bed and cramped interior leaving you with something only a little more useful than a Miata.
3. I could be wrong but I think besides the relatively small bed; it couldn’t actually haul much because of weight restrictions.
4. Very expensive for what it is when new. There were better options for cheaper or near he price point if you wanted a truck or performance. Wasn’t it close to the corvette?
5. People bought this truck because it’s what they wanted, not because it was the best at anything. It’s like the Miata: better cars can be found cheaper but people buy them because they like them.
As much as I like the idea of a ute, I don't think they'd sell well here, or at least not well enough to make them viable. The current truck market is at either uber luxury or bros that want to make something look like a monster truck. There's a lot in between of people who think they're safer or just like the size. Plus, having a mini performance truck could impact sales of the Camaro and Corvette. I do wish they would have tried with the Australians. They already had to bring a vehicle over, why not an oddball for our market to see what happens instead of a sedan that no one knows exists?

I agree with your assessment of why no one would buy them but then again Chevy and Ford did sell utes in the US for several decades and they were pretty popular. Imagine one on a mustang chassis with the mustang engines in them. Roughly 30 mpg on the highway would be awesome and you could haul stuff in the bed.
As for the SSR. It was expensive and it didn’t tow much which is probably why it wasn’t popular. I still think the styling looks cool and different so I am not sure why the automotive community is so hung up on the looks. It certainly looks more interesting than a beige midsize or bland truck. At least it has character.
JR1
> Jdrentarol
03/14/2016 at 10:09 | 2 |
You are missing the point. The SSR has character and character is what makes something desirable. Be it a Mustang or something crazy like the SSR. Character and variety are what make the car hobby so great. There is an option for everyone.

Sorry, but that is not unique nor interesting. It’s a terrible idea and never should have happened.
It sucks at being a truck because you can’t actually haul all that much.
It sucks at being a sporty vehicle because it’s too heavy because it’s trying to be a truck and under-powered because adding real power would ruin the chassis since it’s not strong enough to support it because they cut the top off.
It sucks at being a vehicular style accessory because it’s heinously, hideously ugly.
If you want a convertible truck, get an old Dodge Dakota Convertible.
If you want a sports-truck, an old SVT Lightning, or any of the Dodge Ram/Dakota offerings are much better choices.
If you want a vehicular fashion accessory, there are numerous better vehicles.
Just because this combined all three does not make it a good idea.

I think it’d be great. I think their thinking is market desires have shifted or they’re afraid of cannibalizing sales of their pony/sports cars. There’s so much money wrapped up in things these days that corporations are afraid to take chances often. That’s why we keep getting sequels, spin offs, and comic book movies.
I'll take an interesting car that I don't like the looks over a average looking car that I don't notice. I don't like the new civic but at least it's more interesting than the previous 2 generations. It's funny because it doesn't matter what the civic is or looks like because people will just keep buying them. They could slap the civic badge on a soap box racer, give it apple play and an airbag that'll kill you and people would still buy them in droves lauding their reliability and fuel efficiency.
